Official Visit
District Governor Charles K. Murphy, Sr.
DG Charlie was here for his “official” visit. He thanked PDG Duke Faubert and current ADG, Deepak Vishnu, for their service to Rotary.
Charlie joined Rotary in college and continued until he became president of the Fairhaven Club, not for one year, but for three! He is a three time Paul Harris Fellow. He is married to Carrie, and they have three children who take an active role in community service. This year the Rotary theme is “Building Communities, Bridging Continents”. Ray Klinginsmith is the current RI President.
In 1994, Charlie formed a not-for-profit, MOLIFE (Murphy and Others, Living Independently for Future Endeavors), an organization focused on supported employment. He is an actor, who has appeared in “Underdog," and has played Hitler, Ronald Reagan and H.G. Wells. He spoke about his training in San Diego where he received his maroon theme coat and met with incoming District Governors from around the world. He was concerned with how he was going to visit 66 clubs in the District while doing three jobs, until he met an incoming DG from India who had 122 clubs over a huge geographic area.
He told the story of Maximo, a Honduran man he met while he was in Honduras with his club members to build a well. Maximo said that, “God will get me a wheelchair.” Charlie raised $500 for a wheelchair that was stolen before it even got to Maximo. His plan was to personally deliver another wheelchair to Maximo. After more travails, Maximo finally received his wheelchair! Charlie continues to go to Honduras to provide water filters to the villagers. Because of these filters, the villagers are much healthier.
DG Charlie thanked the Providence Club, the largest one in the district, for all it does in the community. President Cynthia thanked him for his time today and then presented Charlie with chocolates made in Providence.

As I reflect on the support I have received as the new president, the obvious enthusiasm and energy of the members, and the bold plans of our committees and our Centennial, I found the following paragraphs and thought how fitting most of these words are today:
“I have come in close contact with all the officers and members and I want to say right here that never has an officer of any organization, bar none, had more loyal support or been given more efficient counsel than myself.
“The officers of this club, its board of directors, the membership of its various committees have almost without exception worked hard, unselfishly and unceasingly for the interests of the club and the welfare of its members.”
L.B. Leeman
The first president of the Rotary Club of Providence
From The Rotarian - December 1913 issue
L.B. Leeman was the manager of Browning King & Co., located on the corner of Eddy and Westminster streets in Providence. The BK & Co. sold men’s clothing, hats and furnishings.
Be Bold!
Cynthia

David Eisenberg won a rare vintage bottle of vino as the prize when his “passport” from a recent club meeting was drawn.
Walt Adamowicz announced that we will again be able to enjoy a Patriots Game, thanks to Stanley Sorrentino, on Sunday, September 19 at 4:15. The game will be with the NY Jets. You will need to get the names of your guests to either Walter or Stanley. For those who don’t care about football, but enjoy the camaraderie, President Cynthia announced they could join her while she knits.
