August 2nd Meeting
Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood is home to what’s called The Box Office, colorful, energy efficient office space being constructed from cast-off shipping containers!
Rhode Island School of Design graduate Joseph Haskett, of Distill Studio, described the fascinating project. Distill Studio is one of the partners in the initiative, which is outlined in this article from the Providence Journal.
According to Providence: The Creative Capital website, Distill Studio’s focus on energy efficiency as well as sustainability distinguishes them—“but what really makes them stand out is their progressive approach to the building process. Distill practices Integrated Design, a collaborative front-loaded alternative to the traditional design-bid-build linear approach.”
August 10th Meeting
Suzanne Cannon introduced Classification Talks by:
Julie Casamiro lives in North Kingstown with her husband of 26 years and they like to travel. As a result of her life-changing experience in Leadership RI, she moved from MetLife to the staff at Children’s Friend (after being on the board of the organization). The organization, established in 1834, works with youth from birth to 6 and provides support to families. Last year they tripled the size of the agency which provided services to 26,000 last year. Julie is responsible for marketing, communications, program development, and the foster children’s program. She is responsible for three major fund raisers per year and every dollar she raises goes directly to services; administrative costs are paid by the agency’s endowment fund.
Abednego Dahn is one of ten children; he was born in Liberia. His father held a government position there and was forced to leave the country when Charles Taylor came into power. After settling in Providence, Abednego decided to learn American English at Central HS and received his degree in 1999 from Bryant University. He has been married ffor eight years to his best friend, Esther, who works as a project manager in MA. He worked for payroll services companies for five year, knowing that he always wanted to start his own business. He developed a business plan, found five investors and narrowed them down to Cornerstone, a benefit advisory firm, with 1600 clients nationwide, which now offers payroll services with Abednego as the partner responsible for the division. Service above Self is integral in his life.

Ach du liebe Gott!
My words, “Ach du liebe Gott!," were said to myself a few days ago when I discovered our club was hosting a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and she had arrived.
We were not expecting her; there was a snafu at the District level. But seeing an opportunity through the problem at hand, I knew we had to host this young woman from Bavaria, Germany.
I have been there, in a strange country, with little command of the language, ignorant of cultural and religious practices, and lacking the life skills to manage suddenly on my own. I remember how it felt and had empathy for this Rotary scholar.
I was 19 when I moved to Germany to work and later moved to study in Austria. I spoke some German, but when they spoke to me it sounded nothing like classroom German.
Three weeks into my adventure my father died unexpectantly. I returned to the United States for three weeks and then went back to Mannheim, Germany. There was no welcoming party for my arrival. I arrived in Salzburg, Austria two months later and all on my own figured out public transportation, found a room to rent, and started school.
My incredibly wonderful 18 months in Europe humbled me and helped me understand the world beyond my little life in little Rhode Island. I am so grateful to the people I met along the way. They all shaped who I am today.
Now, our club has the opportunity to shape another life. Let’s make a difference.
Viel spass!
Cynthia
