Jenny Miller helped us celebrate the day after Mother's Day by bringing her mother and two daughters to lunch.

Art Norwalk reported that DGE Charlie Murphy is reading our newsletter and hopes Providence Rotarians will attend his induction on June 3. Art's 2nd Happy Buck was to recommend that everyone read Cynthia Leonard's President-Elect's Musings on the club web site.

Steve Hug complimented the new web site. "How far we have come in just one year!"

Jim Scanlan's daughter has just graduated from NYU and has a job in the theater in NYC.

Abednego Dahn had a visit from a friend and they went to see the friend's mother and had a meal which Abednego enjoyed so much he will visit the friend's mother soon again.

Jim Williams is happy to be back from Florida and was pleased to hear from his grandson on a navy ship in the Mediterranean.

PP Paul Segal spoke highly of Kelly's Car Wash.

Barry Fain had praise for PE Cynthia Leonard and the Executive Committee and enjoyed his high school reunion. Forty-two classmates showed up for their 50th reunion at Moses Brown.

Parker Smith said Beethoven's 9th at Veterans last Saturday deservedly broke all records for the length of the ovation.

Jerry Cannon is glad PP Norman MacLeod and Jim Williams are back from Florida and advised everyone to be cautious if they play golf with Maury Ryan.

Kris David wished Holly, Liz and Walter "break-a-leg."

Reported by Dave Burnham

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Han-Shen Chen was introduced by Kris David who has been his local support person. He comes from Taipei, capital city of Taiwan, and is sponsored by Taipe, Pe-itou Rotary Club, District 3520, Rotary International. He has a degree in architecture from his university in Taiwan and is now studying Digital and Media at RISD.

Han-Shen drew an opening laugh by beginning his powerpoint presentation by sharing the Chinese character for Rotary which literally means "wheel chair". This is not so strange, he said, because wheelchairs and Rotary both exist to help people.

After showing a few of his architectural designs Han-Shen gave a brief history of Taiwan. Prior to the great Chinese immigration of 1945 the Island was inhabited by ten indigenous groups. Taipei has grown into a large city which we should all visit. Be sure to look at the handicrafts on display at the National Palace Museum and don't neglect the night life. Then go into the countryside and enjoy the mountain and lake scenery.

Han-Shen has been very active with Rotaract and has enjoyed associating with young people from all over the world. He emphasized his activities with RYLA (Rotarian Youth Leadership Associates) which has involved considerable community service and a strong commitment to make a difference in the world. In summary, Han-Shen Chen made a very interesting presentation laced with humor, sincerity, and contagious enthusiasm. Anyone who might feel a little jaded by the "make the world better theme" will be invigorated by the energy and zest for life of Han-Shen Chen

I'll start this week's message by congratulating Pat Germani, Linda Xavier, and our entire membership, for doing what Rotarians do best by donating 405 pounds of peanut butter to the R.I. Food Bank - our largest contribution ever in this yearly effort!  A special thanks goes to Ben Hadsell and his help in getting Cooley Co to participate in a major way for the third straight year. Thanks to Pat's tireless involvement in this project, ‘we' have identified and applied for a matching Feinstein challenge contribution as well. Give ourselves, and Pat, a hug (at least a ‘slap on the back').

I am really looking forward to joining with approximately 50 of our members tonight to enjoy ‘A Little Night Music' at Barker. A little night wine and a lot of socializing will be great too. We'll try to get photos of our thespians in costume to share Monday.

Let's keep in mind that our board meeting this month will be on May 27 (Barbara, Tony, and I will be in Esperanza May 20), that District Governor Charlie Murphy will be installed June 3 in Acushnet, that we'll accompany students from San Miguel (and others) to the trout hatchery on June 5, and that the 50th anniversary of the million dollar meal will be celebrated with a special brunch on June 27 at White's.

It was a pleasure to once again spend some time with our visiting Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, Han-Shen Chen from the Taipei-Pei Tou club. His presentation of material about his country was most informative, well prepared and presented, nothing short of what we've come to expect and profit from as a result of this wonderful international program. By the way, Rotary International has decided to formally add a 5th avenue of service - New Generations - to encompass RYLA, GSE, Scholars, etc., etc. The future of Rotary is in our ever-growing more diverse hands. I wish Han-Shen all the best in seeing his design and architecture skills used to change the world.

Yours in Rotary,

Richard

Walter Adamowicz reminded everyone of the fishing derby with San Miguel boys on June 5, and the Boston Pops Concert on June 9. Bus leaves from the Marriott at 6 p.m.

President Richard Applebaum encouraged members to go to the District Conference on the Cape on the 14th thru 16th. Check with Sec. Susan Johnson. President Richard also endorsed the 50th Anniversary of the Million Dollar Meal at White's in Westport on June 27.
