President Richard and fellow Dominican Republic travelers Wendy Marcus, Barbara Harris and Kris David present the flag of the Rotary Club of Esperanza on their return from a mission to deliver water filters and dictionaries.

President-elect Cynthia reported on the "Visioning" strategy session held a couple of months ago, which involved more than two dozen Providence Rotarians over the course of 4 hours looking ahead to 2015.  Data from the session have been analyzed, and some of the findings are that we want to:

  • be a club of 200 to 225 members;
  • be an informal club, where tennis shoes are welcome next to tuxedos;
  • be a diverse club;
  • create a buzz about Rotary, and support the use of social media in this effort;
  • expand the dictionary project to serve children across the state;
  • provide 100,000 shelter boxes;
  • provide computers to school children;
  • have a membership consisting of 100% Paul Harris Fellows;
  • raise $5.6 million to do all our projects;
  • have 100% of our members wear their Rotary pins to the meeting;
  • eliminate homelessness and illiteracy.

A development committee has been formed to narrow down the many projects. And over Cynthia's term as president, 2010-2011, she wants Providence Rotary to BE BOLD

President Richard presented Barbara Harris, Wendy Marcus, and Kris David with Rotary coins and the banner of the Esperanza,Dominican Republic's Rotary club for the mission they and others undertook delivering water filters to that impoverished community. Barbara Harris proclaimed it a "tremendous trip," though "We saw conditions that were terrible." President Richard noted that the community has a need for an ambulance as well as more water filters, needs Providence Rotary will no doubt help address in the future. He noted the trip was one of the highlights of his presidential year.

President Richard noted that June 3rd is the installation of the new district governor, Charles Murphy. It will take place at the Century House, in Acushnet, MA. President Richard and President-elect Cynthia are among those planning to attend

Avenues of Service:
Now There Are FIVE

Representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation approved an enactment 28 April to add a fifth Avenue of Service: New Generations.

After adopting an amendment to change the name from Youth Service, as originally proposed, to New Generations, the Council narrowly supported the addition to article 5 of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. The 263-250 vote was received by surprised gasps and applause after a short debate.

New Generations joins Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service as the foundation of club activity. Before starting a project, Rotarians are asked to think broadly about how their club and its members could contribute within each avenue. Learn more here.
