Our March 15 speaker was Karen Salvatore of North Kingstown, founder of the non-profit “Food & Truth,” which she created in 2005 to raise awareness of food and ingredient issues. A program of Food & Truth is called Fit2Cook4Kids, which addresses food and other issues for children with obesity problems. The idea is to help address the national problem of childhood obesity and childhood diabetes.

Last year the Fit2Cook4Kids program took place at the DaVinci Center in Providence over a 6 week period. Forty-eight middle school youngsters graduated from the program, which involves learning about such basics as proper hand-washing, basic kitchen skills and more. Participants are paid a small stipend.

More information can be found about the program by reading the Fall, 2009 issue of edible RHODY magazine, or by visiting Food & Truth on Facebook. Ms. Salvatore may be reached at 401-294-6800 or by email at KarenSalvatore@gmail.com.

President's Blog

After having a great weekend, I've had a great week with Rotary business and fellowship.

I am indeed quite gratified about our Foundation/Club's substantial contribution to the Haiti Shelter Box Relief effort. I have been monitoring the planning/efforts surrounding the P.R. we are going to arrange for the formal presentation we will conduct to announce same to the public, District, and International of this noteworthy contribution.

Our Club is planning submissions of all kinds for District Awards consideration. In the process we have been reviewing our constantly evolving new Newsletter and Web presence.  If you haven't been on the site recently, please ‘go'. We would appreciate any and all feedback, comments, etc. On April 12, at our next Club Assembly, the Technology Committee will provide us all with another web tutorial.

Along with discussing upcoming 2010 dates and events, or probables, such as Street Painting and the Holiday Party, Sue Johnson agreed at our recent Ex. Committee meeting to act as the point person to receive commitments and provide info on upcoming District Events.

Significant news from our Board Meeting of March 18 is that our budget is showing a very slight surplus and should be about break even for 2009-2010.  Although I can't say I've done a lot personally, I'll take the credit (thanks all of you who really deserve it).

Another exciting possibility as a portion of our April 12 meeting will be a brief piece of the play A Little Night Music presented by some Barker Playhouse actors to promote our Club's Attendance at the theatre on May 13. Our own Holly Applegate and Liz Messier are in the cast. Holly has tickets and information.

Members of our Club are likely to be traveling with Woonsocket Rotarians sometime in May to Esperanza, D.R. to present and start installing water purification systems. Thanks Tony Mendez, Barbara Harris, Kris David, and others involved who have helped us obtain a District matching grant to facilitate this project.

Finally, congratulations to all officers and directors who were voted onto the Board for 2010-11.  In a high voter turnout for election of all very qualified candidates, the vote was very close. For anyone who didn't make the Board this time, agree to be reconsidered in future elections if asked. It took me 2, maybe 3, election cycles to make the Board for the first time.

Yours in Rotary,

Richard
