Hurley Middle School Students Double Down for Haiti
Gary Kaufman introduced representatives of Seekonk's Hurley Middle School's Student Council. The students at the school had raised $867 for Haiti relief and were looking for a way to make their donation do the most good. They read about our Foundation's Matching Grant for Shelter Boxes and contacted us via the club web page. Ron Hoak, chair of the Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, announced that our foundation would match the students' gift, thus providing over $1,700 toward our goal of $25,000 for 25 Shelter Boxes for the Haitian refugees.

Don Saracen introduced our March 22 speaker, Deb Ruggiero. Deb is a former Providence Rotarian, now a member of the Jamestown Club. She is the Director of Community Development at Citadel Broadcasting, creator of the radio show, "Amazing Women" and a State Representative from Jamestown and Middletown.
She is a founding board member of the Women's Fund and a member of the Philanthropy Committee of the RI Foundation. The platform she ran on focused on four E's-Education, Economy, Elderly and Environment.
In her first term as a state representative, Deb said she is focusing on economic issues, particularly the need for the state to create an environment where new businesses can start and grow. She favors enhanced workforce development, strengthened education, streamlined permitting, wind power and a return of the America's Cup to Newport.

Pat Germani said we'd be conducting the peanut butter drive thru the end of April-don't forget to bring some to the next meeting!
