Ed Queenan spoke of a friend who has run the Boston Marathon 29 times but now has brain cancer – calling her an inspiration to everyone.
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS
Mark Cousineau led the club in singing Happy Birthday to his 12-year-old daughter Lilly, who did not seem to be terribly embarrassed.
Christy Clausen introduced four Interact members,LuahBeah, René Colato, Juan Corona, Yansa Diaz,taking advantage of school vacation to visit us. The Interact Club is working on helping homeless people.
Jerry Cannon suggested sending get well cards to PP Norm MacLeod, who is ill at home.
George Burman reminded members to sign up for the Paint-Off! at the club web site. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
Bryan Cook pitched the 50-50 raffle with great odds to win – The club has committed to a total award of $10,000 so we need to sell 200 tickets just to break even.We have sold about 50 and the drawings start in early June, so time is of the essence. The club's goal is to generate much needed funds, to pay for our 25-30 grant awards for President Paul 's year. Remember there was no Street Painting Festival last October to help fund these awards so this 50/50 raffle is an important one. This is a great chance to get back your $50 investment since there are about thirty drawings and we are hoping to sell at least 200 tickets. This is also a great chance to get your friends and associates to help the Rotary support the children of greater Providence. See Ben Longtin for tickets.
Liz Messier invited us to the benefit performance of Almost, Maine at Barker Playhouse on May 7. This is a fund raiser to support our own Providence Rotary member, Kris David, in her year of being District Governor. Both Liz and Walter Cotter Providence Rotary members are in the cast so it should be fun for all!
The board noted at it's recent board meeting that all the fundraising requests seem to be happening all at once. Each year as we close out a year this tends to happen plus we have Kris's District Governor appointment adding to the fundraising. The board is hoping that members will use the 50/50 raffle to ask others in your circles to contribute. John Folan asked employees in his office who was interested in purchasing a chance and got 3 buys in 2 minutes. Many non Rotary members like the idea of a gamble in conjunction with the proceeds being used to fund children's grants.
Sponsor Barry Fain and President Paul inducted our newest member, Dr. Harold Horwitz, a retired physician who said he was proud to be a Rotarian and looks forward to helping reduce hunger.
Dick Gregory, Providence Rotary member and Vice Chairman of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Inc.., introduced Ms. Charlene Cutler, Executive Director.
Charlene Cutler, brought us up to date on plans for the creation of a National Historic Park along “America’s Hardest Working River” in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Her first advice was “Be patient” because it will be another three years before a management plan is in place to build on decades of past work and prepare the resources to greet visitors into the future. The Corridor encompasses 25 communities in the two states, running from Providence to Worcester; it is the first national heritage corridor to become a national park.
Acting in parallel with park development, the Corridor is engaged in a wide range of activities including:
Energizing volunteers
Educational activities
Recreation, including bikeway, walking and kayaking
Creating a new visitorcenter in an old Worcester factory
A series of major events under the heading of GO! Is planned for
