INSPIRATION
 
Jim Gilcreast gave an inspiration based on the Rotary Four-Way Test.Self, giving enough of ourselves to help our fellow man, to work for all humanity.
 
 
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS/REMINDERS
 
President Paul Borrelli recognized our Club’s new Paul Harris fellows: Bintou Chatterton,, John Folan, and Geoff Gaunt.
 
Walter Adamowicz reported that the fishing derby was a great success, and directed our attention to pictures on each table of happy kids, very unhappy fish with hooks in their mouths and earnest Rotarians working at disengaging said fish from said hooks.
 
Jenny Miller announced that the exciting, the installation of our own Kris David as District Governor will take place on July 9, followed by the Glenn Miller ensemble. All members are strongly encouraged to attend this prestigious event for our club.  See Liz Messier to sign up.  (There will be no regular club meeting on July 6.)
 
Jenny Miller also announced the Flip Flops for Friends drive for La Romana in the Dominican Republic.. Our goal is 3,000 pairs of flip flops. Posters are available to place at your office or place of business. If you collect them, Jenny will pick them up and deliver them to the Dominican Republic.
 
Don Saracen reminded us of Kevin Oates’ imminent retirement as the Club’s Sargent-At-Arms, and requested anyone interested in checking in members to see him.
 
President Paul Borelli reminded Rotarians to take care of any unpaid dues. The Club is carrying a significant dues receivable on its books.

Charter Schools in Rhode Island
 
Jeannie D’Agostino introduced our speaker Rose Mary Grant; Head of School, Highlander Charter School and of the Association of Charter Schools in Rhode Island.
 
Students are selected for the school at an annual drawing and 85% of the students in the school are eligible for free or reduced lunch; there are over 2000 on the waiting list.  The focus is on providing children living in the urban core an equitable education with those in the suburbs.  They have two facilities—one in Providence with Pre K- 6th grades and one in Warren for grades 7-10.  Grade 11 will be added next year.  Test scores are at or above the State average.  Classrooms are smaller, teachers provide individual attention and perform home visits with families, and there are no contractual issues as the teachers are non-union, but receive salaries and benefits according to the local union schedule.  Teachers and administrators perform multiple functions.  She discussed financial pressures on charter schools and the need to raise additional funds for the school’s programs.  They also provide educational opportunities to the families of their students.  Arthur Robbins talked about establishing the first charter school in RI , the Textron/Chamber of Commerce Academy in 1996, designed to demonstrate to the public schools how to get students going in the right direction.
