Speaker

President Elect Kris David introduced our speaker and new member Bob Watt.

He told us about The Golden Rule wooden peace ship, which was designed by Hugh Angelman and organized against the threat of nuclear weapons, visiting us in Providence.  The Golden Rule and its crew will be docked at India Point Park from June 11 through June 13th.

The Golden Rule first gained attention in 1958 when four Quaker peace activists sailed the ship toward the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean to try to disrupt atmospheric nuclear weapons testing planned by the U.S.  For the next five decades, the boat would take to the seas in protest.  After sinking in 2010 during a Northern California gale, the Golden Rule was rebuilt by a group that included members of the nonprofit organization Veterans for Peace.  Since last year, it's been on a tour of the eastern United States.
