Speaker

Elizabeth McGann is the program manager for Girls on the Run in Rhode Island.  Founded in 1996, Girls on the Run International is a nonprofit that has served more than 2 million girls across North America.  Here in Rhode Island, 4700 girls have been impacted. Teaching critical life skills is the cornerstone of their research based programs.  Trained volunteer coaches inspire girls of all abilities to strengthen confidence and other important life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and physical activity.

Elizabeth talked about how girls today are exposed to many gender stereo types, societal obstacles and cultural challenges that can be detrimental to their emotional and physical health.  Yes, the program is about running, but they are geared to making an impact at a critical age when confidence and physical activity typically decline. Different programs are offered for several critical age groups – all working to develop self-confidence and to learn life skills in a fun, collaborative environment.  The 5 C’s best describe the goals of Girls on the Run:  Character.  Care.  Connections. Competence. Contribution.
