Meeting Date:  June 20, 2023

Reporter:  Art Norwalk

Pledge

New Providence Rotarian Troylynda Williams led the pledge.

Inspiration

Bill Applegate waxed poetic on the summer solstice with its long days and pleasant get-togethers.

Announcements

June 27 meeting, featuring installation of Kris Davis as president, plus other officers and new board members, will be held at the Squantum Association, 947 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Riverside.

After receiving a $70 "parking ticket" for overstaying her car's time in the Marriott parking lot by about one minute, Kris advised us to check off four hours duration when signing in for meetings.

Happy Bucks

  • First-time collector Jane Berkowitz led off with $5 for the recently completed and highly successful United Way statewide book drive.
  • Alex David was proud of our Literacy Initiative upon hearing a news report that half of American youth are not fully literate.
  • Mary Brewster invited members to attend an exhibit of her landscape paintings of the Azores at the Narrow Center for the Arts in Fall River.
  • Congratulations to Steve for a successful presidency from Holly Applegate, Sharon Garland, Kris David and Richard Applebaum (on Zoom).
  • Jim Gilcreast offered $10 for the kindness and compassion of Margaret Kane, whom he described as "the wit of the club."

The Great Re-Engagement

Pres. Steve wound up "his year" with an upbeat review of what he labeled The Great Re-Engagement, following on The Great Re-Opening under PP Holly.
Accomplishments included:
  • 12 new members, which he said is "some sort of record"
  • $15,000 increase in gross receipts from the Legends for Literacy Gala
  • Renaming the Childhood Literacy Initiative in honor of Jane Babcock, George's mother and a beloved children's librarian in Providence
  • Return of the holiday party with students from San Miguel
  • Revival of the Environment Committee with an Earth Day cleanup at India Point Park
Steve concluded by quoting Groucho Marx:
“I’ll stay a week or two, I’ll stay the summer through, But I’m telling you, I must be going.”
