DGE Russ Bertrand reminded us about the Paul Harris Rotary Foundation Dinner on November 10th at the Providence Marriott. Guest speaker is Ed Futa, immediate past RI executive. Tickets are $45.
Jan Feyler announced that the Foundation had voted to recognize George Babcock as its Partner in Philanthropy because of his significant estate gift to the Foundation. The event recognizing him will be held at Twin River on November 20th, at 8am. Tickets are $40.
Don Saracen introduced Peter C. Dorsey, Jr., President of The Business Development Company of Providence. Its mission is to create and retain jobs by financing the growth and expansion of companies in RI, Southern MA and Eastern CT. Their status as a non-bank lender provides the unique ability to operate outside of traditional lending processes in meeting portfolio company needs. They currently serve a diverse spectrum of over 40 companies ranging from web-based services, technology, manufacturing and medical services, among others.
Companies supported often have difficulty getting financing. The average loan is $250K and it’s challenging finding companies to loan to. Loans are based on positive cash flow and collateral, a good management team and trends in the industry. They maintain close communications throughout the relationship He told of a company whose sales went from $20 million to $2 million. They knew they needed to change their marketing to turn it around and as a result, increased sales from $1.4 million to $3.5 million. Member banks range from large multinationals to local community banks.
