President Mike announced with sadness the passing of PP Cynthia Leonard’s husband, and asked members to keep PP Bill DiBiasio’s wife in their thoughts as she undergoes surgery later in the week.
Liz Messier asked members to let her know if they’re interested in attending It’s A Wonderful Life at Barker Playhouse on Thursday, December 10, reception 6:30, performance 7:30.
Membership Chair Bill DiBiasio announced that our club will be observing long-standing Rotary policies regarding recruitment and attendance. For recruitment, these include requiring that prospective members have decision-making authority in their organizations and following the classification system. Prospects will be informed in advance of the financial commitment required to be a Rotarian. Attendance rules require members to attend 50% of meetings in every six-month period (makeups, e-club meetings and taking part in Rotary activities count toward this); also to attend 30% of meetings per year at their home club. Members who miss four meetings in a row are deemed to have resigned from the club; however the board may elect not to accept the resignation. “Meetings are what make Rotary,” Bill concluded.

Did you know that the New England affiliate of the famed Boys Town organization is headquartered in Rhode Island and serves over 700 families each year in five distinct programs? We learned that, and more, from Ashley Kuzmanko Mederois and Marcy Shyllon of the local group.
Residential services are provided in family-like settings staffed by married couples at a campus in Portsmouth.
Foster Family services for abused or neglected boys and girls are provided in the homes of trained and licensed volunteer parents. Professional support is available to the parents 24/7.
In-Home Family Services sends counselors to visit troubled families with the goal of turning situations around so kids do not have to be taken out of their homes.
Common Sense parenting classes help families prevent problems that can result in children being removed to state custody.
The web site YourLifeYourVoice.org offers help to troubled adolescents; it has prevented over 500 suicides.
Ashley said all their programs are evidence-based, with research showing that they work. Boys Town New England is collaborating with numerous government and private agencies to reduce duplication and increase efficiency of services to kids and families.
