Barbara Harris announced that the Paint-Off will net around $13,000, the event accolades keep coming in.
Liz Messier invited us to participate in the fundraiser to benefit Kris David’s activities as the next District Governor. The Barker Playhouse will feature an hour-long reception from 6:30 – 7:30 and a performance of Almost Maine to follow. Just to follow-up on the event which took place on Thursday May 7. This was another successful Providence Rotary event. It was well attended mainly by 99% Rotarians and their guests. It was a night at the theater for our club with special guests from Joe Clancy PDG, and Valerie Perry, DG. The play was a collage of six plays within 1 play. The six plays had different story lines and addressed many issues that we face in our day to day lives. It even had a little comedy thrown in to keep you entertained. Congratulations to a fine job acting to Liz Messier, “ who broke two hearts in the play, her own, and her deceased husband only to find a new love ” and to Walter Cotter “who broke one heart in his segment when a long lost love came back to give him an answer to question he proposed many years prior” . Also congratulations to those who coordinated the event, from the selling of the tickets, checking in the attendees, coordinating the social hour and yes even to Mike Kelly who led the Rotarians in singing Happy Birthday to Joe Clancy PDG.
Bill DeBiasio provided the club with an update on the Shelter Box project in Nepal.He also announced that there have been no new cases of Polio in three weeks.
Wendy Marcus reminded club members that we are in “litter pick-up month”. Please pick up your bags and take a picture with your full bag and email to Wendy.
Bryan Cook let us know that the 50/50 raffle will begin on June 1st. Team captains have club members’ packets. Club members are asked to either sell or buy their tickets ($50 each). Bryan asked that any unused tickets be returned to your captain. Liz Messier has put together teams to sell the raffle tickets. Keep in mind that the club is committed to paying out the $200 per week winnings so it is important to sell tickets
Sharon Garland is recruiting volunteers for Rotary Reads. Response has been good but we still have some holes to fill. Last year Terri Adelman’s company had to cover some classrooms. This year we would like to have this a 100% Rotary read event. Come see Sharon for sign up. This is a great event to get new members doing community service. It only takes about 2 hours out of your day including travel to the school and the 4th graders love being read to and especially love the fact that they get a book to take home when the reading is done, (Christmas in the Spring). To make you comfortable Terri will be emailing an agenda so you will be familiar with what you need to cover and you will have a Rotary partner covering the other classrooms in the school.. In addition, the teachers keep the flow going smoothly so you don’t have to fret about your presentation skills.
Julia Phipps from Rotary International shared with the club, that there will be a convening of over 500 Rotarians in Providence this August. This “Zone Institute” is an opportunity for the Providence Club to assist and meet other Rotarians. Julia noted that her group met with the Providence Rotary Board to inquire how our club and be involved. Once the details are worked out more will follow in this newsletter
