Jim Gilcreast gave a tribute to our veterans followed by Mary Brewster who told us of the lifetime of experiences she has had as a result of learning to read as a child. She encouraged all to get involved with a child at Kizirian, either as a tutor or a pen pal. “The importance of this relationship will be all out of scale with the amount of time that you put into it.”

Mary Brewster updated the club on the good works committee’s warm clothing drive. All are encouraged to purchase hats and gloves (new items only please) which will be given to Family Services of RI for distribution to those in need.
Wendy Marcus gave an update on the “Little Library” and thinks she has found the perfect spot. Members can donate books by bringing them to a club meeting.
President Holly read a letter from District Governor, Billy Roberts, thanking the club for the hospitality during his recent visit and encouraging us to continue what we are doing well.

Pres. Elect, Steve Hug, introduced our speaker, Bill Bartholomew, who is a musician, podcaster, and journalist.
Bill hosts his own podcast called Bartholomew Town in addition to doing work for PBS as well as fill-in stints on WPRO as a radio talk show host. He believes that the key to getting things done is through partnerships and opened his talk with a description of disruption. Bill does not believe in disruption to be rude but rather as a way to break through the status quo.
After graduation from college, Bill moved to NYC with his band and eschewed the traditional path to success. The emergence of technology allowed him to bypass existing barriers to playing and distributing music. This experience helped him realize the power of disruptive technology to change the status quo. He felt talk radio was missing the mark in many regards and wanted to challenge this.
Thus marked the birth of his podcast, Bartholomew Town. Bill believes he was able to attract guests because they felt comfortable being themselves and having open dialogue that was not available in traditional media. His podcast allowed for longer formats and bypassed hurdles such as sponsor expectations to really put out the type of show he wanted to do.
Bill closed the formal portion of his talk by asking us what we want being from Providence or being from Rhode Island to mean, and then accept all avenues to making that happen.
