Eric Creamer, executive director of the RI chapter of MADD, stated that the agency’s mission is “To end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.”  The organization was founded in California in 1980 and the RI Chapter was established in 1983.

30-33% of all accidents are the result of drunk or drugged driving in both RI and the US. There was a 10% decrease last year and a 50% decrease in these accidents over the last 20 years in RI.

The agency works with teens and their parents about the dangers of drunk driving, helps victims thru financial, court, etc. processes. They are also involved legislatively, this year submitting a bill about the use of ignition lock systems and bringing RI’s minimum and maximum sentences in line with those of other states.

He also talked about a German system which can determine drivers’ alcohol levels when they get into a car and will not allow the engine to start. The system needs further testing and research data.

Eric is president of the North Kingstown Rotary Club.
Happy Bucks

Margaret Kane has unfortunately suffered a broken arm and could not be with us for Happy Bucks. We wish her a quick recovery and speedy return. Paula Jacobson did a fine job in her place.

James Gilcreast has happily returned from a great holiday in Bermuda, including some especially treasured moments spent at the famous and historic regal watering hole known as the Royal Amateur Dinghy Club in Hamilton Harbor. Jim continued his streak of 41 years of never missing a meeting by making one up in Bermuda
