What is the Million Dollar Meal?
It’s a way of giving to The Rotary Foundation (that’s the international foundation, not the club foundation). We have a low-cost lunch and the difference goes to Rotary’s worldwide projects including eradication of polio.
Halloween Party is tentatively set for October 30th at the Squantum Club. Contact Michael Friedman if you’re interested in going. $30 per person.

World Polio Day is October 24th and Rotarians still have the challenge of Pakistan and Afghanistan. DG Kris David asked in the September 28th meeting that Rotarians go to the RI website on October 19th, the day of our Million Dollar meal, and make a gift to Polio Plus. She reminded the Club that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match our gifts 2:1 for greater impact.

In advance of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority’s 50th anniversary next year, RIPTA executive director of planning Amy Pettine gave us an update on the bus system’s current situation and future plans. Some highlights:
RIPTA provides about 20 million rides per year.
70% of Rhode Islanders can walk to a bus stop.
Most RIPTA revenue comes from the state gasoline tax.
Major recent operational changes include extension of service to South Attleboro MBTA, addition of hubs outside Providence, creation of efficient, higher speed R-Line and renovation of Kennedy Plaza.
Future goals include renovations to the East Side tunnel, expanded bus presence at Providence AMTRAK station and Jewelry District, reducing need for transfers, establishing downtown circulator routes and acquiring new fare boxes.
As always in public transportation, finances are problematic and Amy says a sustainable source of funding is needed to allow RIPTA to provide the level of service people want.
