On December 5^th Bob Murphy announced we will hold our annual holiday luncheon for the students and faculty of San Miguel School.

 

Ballots approved by the Nominating Committee will be mailed out to all members in good standing the first week of December.

 

Our annual meeting is being moved to a lunch meeting on January 6^th.

Legendary New England Patriots Offensive Line Coach Dante Scarnecchia was recently inducted into the Patriots Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

 

Coach Scarnecchia is a Six-time Super Bowl champion who had previously retired after the 2013 season and returned in 2016 — has rightfully earned his reputation as one of the Patriots most respected and revered coaches in franchise history.  He was officially on Belichick’s staff for five Super Bowl winning teams, earning his sixth ring while serving as a consultant on the 2014 (Super Bowl XLIX) squad.

 

The National Football League Hall of Fame recently honored Coach Scarnecchia, with their New Award of Excellence in Canton Ohio.

 

Coach Scarnecchia shared with us lessons he learned dealing with people. He explained that communications are critical no matter what line of work your in. He quoted George Bernard Shaw who said, “The single biggest problem in communications is the illusion that it has taken place.” How many times you’ve said what you thought was clear to someone and they say I’ve got it, when they don’t really understand what you just said. He gave an example of how he would tell his lineman to block the great linebacker Lawrence Taylor to make his point. He would explain in simple terms that no matter where he lines up it’s your responsibility not the running back to block him. He would always say I want to make this clear in no uncertain words and they would take it in and understand what their job was to do.

 

Tell the truth and be honest.  That way they will know you’re always being straightforward.  

 

Provide solutions so they can understand what they must do in order do it right.

You want your players or children to develop and form great habits. For instance, in football if players don’t do their jobs right, they will have to leave.

Communications is not only about talking but the importance of listening is a huge part of the communication process. When coaching he learned to separate the important things from the unimportant things. It’s also important to read the room to understand who is getting your message and who is not.

 

He explained watching Hall of Fame Coach Bill Parcells write on a white board the word Conflict. Then Parcells told his players I won’t lie to you, and I expect you won’t lie to me, otherwise we’ll be in conflict. This was an example of a clear straight forward message that could be understood by all.
