Today, as we explore 'Service Above Self,' I want to share a personal journey that embodies the spirit of selfless service, nurtured by a lifelong affiliation with the Rotary family and the wisdom of a dear friend, Winnie the Pooh. Since I can remember, I've been part of the Rotary family, guided by my father, a dedicated member and former president. Our family enthusiastically attended every event and traveled across Europe for Rotary gatherings, creating cherished memories that shaped my understanding of community and service.
Before I delve into the heart of our discussion today, I want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible success of our recent charity gala night, the Legends for Literacy Gala, which took place last Monday. It was an unforgettable evening filled with inspiration and generosity. Thanks to the dedication and support of our Rotary community and the broader community, we raised substantial funds that will empower us to continue our important literacy initiatives. This event was a testament to the power of unity and service, and I'm truly grateful for the unwavering commitment of our fellow Rotarians and the broader community.
Now, let me share a significant chapter of my personal journey that aligns with the essence of 'Service Above Self.' One remarkable experience that has shaped my dedication to service was our family's participation in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program. We had the privilege of hosting three delightful German girls as part of a cultural and development exchange. Witnessing the transformative impact of such programs ignited a passion within me to contribute further. A few years later, my friends and I established an Interact club in Albania, aiming to make a positive difference in our community. Even when I went to high school in the USA, my commitment to service remained unwavering, and I stayed connected to the Interact club.
However, life's path took me to college at Bryant University, and I faced a moment of challenge. The Interact club there was no longer active, and due to the constraints of the pandemic, reaching former members became a daunting task. Undeterred, after graduating and settling in Providence, I set myself a mission—to reignite my involvement with the Rotary community. Through dedication and perseverance, I became an active member, and the rest is history. Today, I stand before you, a testament to the enduring spirit of Rotary and the profound influence of beloved characters like Winnie the Pooh.
Winnie the Pooh, a bear of great wisdom, once shared, 'You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.' These words resonate deeply in the context of our Rotary mission. They remind us that within each of us lies the potential for immense impact. We are stronger together as a Rotary family, supporting one another and amplifying our efforts to serve our communities and the world. Like Pooh and his friends, we draw upon our collective bravery, strength, and intelligence to face the challenges in our path and make a difference.
Pooh also said, 'A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.' In the vast landscape of Rotary's global service, it is this 'little consideration' that binds us, making our collective service truly impactful. Each small act of kindness and service, inspired by Pooh's wisdom, is a vital stitch in the rich tapestry of Rotary's commitment to 'Service Above Self.' Let us all draw from Pooh's philosophy and embrace our bravery, strength, and intelligence to serve with all our hearts, knowing that each act of service, no matter how small, makes a significant difference in the lives of others. Happy Birthday to past District Governor, Lou Marciano, who will be celebrating his 99th birthday in two days. The members of the Cranston Rotary brought in a special cake to share with everyone to celebrate Lou's birthday.

They are Marie Bernardo-Sousa, President of Johnson & Wales University, Mary Meixell, Dean of the College of Business and Nicole Amos, Associate Professor. We are happy to have JWU back in our club.
Philip shared his story of how he contracted polio at age 8. Growing up in Indiana, his brother contracted polio after attending a church Holiday event in Minnesota. Philip contracted polio from his brother, spending weeks in the hospital. Unfortunately, his brother passed away...Philip recovered but suffered paralysis in his upper body. He has since devoted his life to serving others, through membership in the Peace Corp, holding leadership positions in Polio Plus and then as a teacher. Philip shared these facts:
