INSPIRATION
Jeanne D'Agostino reflected on the previous week's presentation by Public Safety Commissioner Stephen Pare and Providence NAACP Director Jim Vincent with a quote from Nelson Mandela: "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
Jenny Miller asked members to donate underwear, personal hygiene items, school supplies and toys for kids in the Dominican Republic.
Phyllis Fern reported that Dick Kaplan was recovering at home after being in the hospital and Maury Ryan was recovering after surgery (recovering so well in fact that he was at the meeting!).
Chairs of many committees gave progress reports. Bottom Line: A Very Active Rotary Club!
Charities Foundation Jan Feyler thanked all who donated and George Babcock for a planned estate gift. Current foundation balance $1.671 million.
Finance Asst. Treasurer Peter Loescher (standing in for the ailing Dick Kaplan) reported a net gain of $5500 for the year ended last June 30 and said the club is in sound financial condition.
PR/Marketing Art Norwalk thanked Nondas Voll for getting speakers reported in Sunday ProJo and reported on upcoming promotional activities for the Paint-Off and DG Installaltion/Glenn Miller Orchestra dance.
Newsletter/Web Site Art Norwalk asked for (and subsequently received) new volunteers to help keep members informed.
Program Art Norwalk thanked the many members who have brought interesting speakers and asked others to propose programs.
Membership Jenny Miller said we now have 126 members with two more in the pipeline, and reported on an accelerated intake process.
International Service Jenny Miller will lead a mission to La Romana, Dominican Republic in early February.
District Governor Kris David Installation/Glenn Miller Orchestra Dance Jenny Miller reported that a committee is actively preparing for this July 9 event. Save the Date!
Street Painting Festival Suzanne Cannon reported that a date has been set for October 10 to coincide with Columbus Day, Gloria Gemma event and WaterFire.
Boston Pops Walt Adamowicz said we're booked for May 14 for a concert featuring Beatles music.
RI Philharmonic Walt Aamowicz said we're booked for Friday, April 10. AMICA has donated 20 tickets for kids.
Holiday Party for San Miguel and Sophia Academy Walt Adamowicz said the date is set for Monday, Dec. 7.
Fishing Derby Walt Adamowicz said the date is set for Saturday, June 6.
Book Club Walt Adamowicz, standing in for Maury Ryan, invited new participants. Meetings include refreshments which "may or may not be better than the book."
Paint-Off/Wine Tasting Barbara Harris said this major fundraiser is set for April 30 in the loft at Geoff Gaunt's Providence Picture Frame, with Music School students to perform. Corporate sponsors are needed.
Lentil Nutrition Supplement Barbara Harris said results will be known in six months from an experiment in Mumbai, India, with a nutrition product designed to help HIV positive children tolerate necessary medication.
Barker Playhouse Liz Messier and co-chair Holly Applegate said Guys & Dolls was successful in raising money to support activities of DGE Kris David; another is planned for March.
Literacy Terri Adelman is looking forward to having club members read to 4th graders and give out 1800 books.
Group Study Exchange Paul Segal and DGE Kris David said the program is being recast as Vocational Training Teams - visiting for shorter periods and open to Rotarians.
Environment Wendy Marcus said the committee has planted trees near the skating rink and Riverwalk, involving student from Interact. Think Green!
Trade Show John McGinn invited members to sign up for the year's only opportunity to promote their businesses in the club.
50/50 Raffle Bryan Cook said tickets will soon go on sale for this fundraiser -- $50 each for chance to win $200 weekly drawing and grand prize after 26 weeks.
Dictionary Randy Dittmar said this year's distribution has gone very smoothly, with positive feedback from the third graders.
